Inspect the clearance and structure

Measure usable height at several points, allowing for cross members and support feet. A container needs to slide out as well as fit underneath. Check the guidance for the bed and mattress support: intended ventilation openings must remain clear. Do not push boxes against feet where pulling them out could shift the supports.

Inspect the floor and underside of the bed for dampness or unusual smells. If moisture is a problem, investigate its cause. A closed plastic box may shield its contents from outside contact, but it does not correct damp room conditions and can trap moisture already inside.

Choose dry, manageable contents

Store only clean, completely dry belongings. Spare bed linen, light seasonal clothes or occasional bags are usually more manageable than heavy piles of paperwork. Daily essentials normally belong somewhere easier to reach. Choose containers that suit the contents and available clearance without pressing them against the underside of the bed.

A lid keeps dust off, but does not automatically make a container suitable for every moisture situation. Do not put away textiles that are still slightly damp. Touching one spot is not necessarily enough to check thick fabrics; allow adequate drying time after washing.

Preserve access and cleaning space

Label the short side that becomes visible first when the box is pulled out. One container for each clear group is easier to use than a long box filled with everything that lacked wardrobe space. Leave room between containers and preserve any clearances required by the manufacturer. Wheels need to suit the floor and stay clean.

Pull the boxes out fully at regular intervals, remove dust and inspect the contents and floor. If you notice dampness or a musty smell, move the contents temporarily to a suitable dry place and investigate. Adding fragrance to bedding does not improve storage conditions.
